Lukasz Kurzatkowski 1958-
Lukasz Kurzaktowski was born in Lublin, Poland, into a family of artists: he is the son of an abstract painter and the grandson of a painter and linocut artist. From 1978 to 1983, he pursued artistic studies in Katowice and later in Warsaw, where he graduated in graphic design in 1983 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The following year, he left Poland and settled in Belgium. There, he continued his personal work in linocut, developing a body of research focused on the relationship between black and white and on a serial approach to the medium.
His work was quickly recognized and awarded with numerous international prizes. In 1993, he received the Prize for Printmaking and Printed Image of the French Community of Belgium in La Louvière, followed in 1994 by the Prix Médiatine in Brussels. In 1995, he was awarded the Grand Prize at the Third International Print Biennial in Bhopal, India, and in 1998 the Sponsor’s Prize at the 4th Sapporo International Print Biennale in Japan. In 2006, he received the Purchase Prize at the 14th Space International Print Biennial in Seoul, South Korea, and in 2008 the Bronze Prize at the International Print Exhibition in Yunnan, China.
Alongside his artistic practice, Lukasz Kurzaktowski has maintained an active career as a graphic designer. Between 2002 and 2007, he designed posters, brochures, and programs for the Royal Theatre La Monnaie in Brussels, and from 2002 to 2005, he was responsible for the creation and implementation of the visual identity of the Royal Museum of Mariemont in Hainaut. From 1985 to 2019, he regularly participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad.
