POL BURY (1922-2005)

The discovery of Calder's work in 1950 prompted Bury to reconsider his approach to art completely and frankly. In 1953, he began cutting out elements and assembling them into mobile plans. Like a folding game, this work stands out for its simplicity, to which the choice of contrasting colours (white, black, red), applied in flat tints, contributes fully. Efficiency dominates. This series of rare and precious works is part of the seminal stage that would lead the artist to devote himself exclusively to sculpture. Les Plans mobiles heralded the arrival of sculptures powered by an electric motor. Movement was to play a key role in an original and innovative body of work that met with international success.
Pol Bury's work was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at Bozar in Brussels (23 February-4 June 2017).
