Belgitudes
From 2 April to 9 October 2022, the exhibition Belgitudes presented a compelling selection of works from the collection of Maurice Verbaet at the LAAC in Dunkerque.
Bringing together a wide range of paintings, sculptures, and installations, the exhibition offered a rich and nuanced overview of Belgian post-war art from 1945 to 1975. Rather than following a strict chronological narrative,
Belgitudes reflected the personal vision and passion of Maurice Verbaet, highlighting the diversity of artistic approaches—from geometric abstraction and gestural practices to figuration and experimental media. Through a thematic presentation, the exhibition revealed the vitality and international resonance of Belgian art in the decades following the Second World War. It also underscored the importance of the Maurice Verbaet collection in preserving and promoting this dynamic and often under-recognized period in art history.
Belgitudes stood as both a portrait of a rich artistic landscape and a testament to the discerning eye of a dedicated collector.
