Shad(p)es: Francis Dusépulchre
In 2024, the Maurice Verbaet Gallery in Knokke presented Shapes / Shades, a solo exhibition dedicated to the work of Belgian artist Francis Dusépulchre (1934–2013).
The exhibition explored the artist’s distinctive investigation of form and perception, bringing together works in which structure, light, and material interact in subtle and dynamic ways. Through reliefs and carefully constructed surfaces, Dusépulchre examined the interplay between shape and shadow, creating compositions that shift according to the viewer’s position and the surrounding light.
Working with materials such as lacquer, plexiglass, and fiber elements, the artist developed a visual language that bridges geometric abstraction and spatial experimentation. His works reveal a refined sensitivity to transparency, luminosity, and depth, positioning light as an essential component of the composition.
