Dynamic stabilities : Jean-Pierre Maury
In 2024, the Maurice Verbaet Gallery in Knokke presented Dynamic Stabilities, a solo exhibition dedicated to the work of Jean-Pierre Maury (b. 1948), in collaboration with Polyedre.
Conceived as a comprehensive curatorial project, the exhibition was accompanied by a fully illustrated publication and a dedicated film, offering deeper insight into Maury’s artistic practice and its theoretical foundations.
The presentation focused on Maury’s distinctive approach to constructed abstraction, in which rigorous compositional systems are combined with a subtle sense of variation and perceptual movement. Working with minimal visual elements—often structured through intersecting lines—the artist develops compositions that evolve through shifts in colour, rhythm, and material.
The collaboration with Polyedre introduced a dialogue between art and design, integrating carefully selected furniture and objects into the exhibition space. This scenographic approach reinforced the spatial and structural dimensions of Maury’s work, inviting viewers to experience the interplay between artwork, environment, and perception.
