Art Antwerp
A layered presentation that brings together diverse artistic voices, reflecting the richness of Belgian post-war art.
At Art Antwerp 2023, the Maurice Verbaet Gallery continued its sustained engagement with the fair, presenting a rich and carefully balanced selection of Belgian post-war art. Building on its presence in previous editions, the gallery once again offered a focused perspective on the artistic landscape that has shaped Antwerp and its wider context since 1945.
The presentation brought together a wide range of artists, including Fred Bervoets, Hugo Claus, René Guiette, Paul Van Hoeydonck, Vic Gentils, Pol Mara, Mi Van Landuyt, and Tapta, among others. Spanning painting, works on paper, reliefs, and sculptural objects, the selection reflected the diversity of approaches that define post-war artistic production. Particular attention was given to works on paper, which formed a strong and coherent thread throughout the booth.
By placing these works in dialogue, the presentation highlighted both the contrasts and connections between expressive figuration, geometric abstraction, and material experimentation. The inclusion of Tapta’s sculptural studies further expanded this dialogue into the spatial realm, reinforcing the breadth of artistic practices represented.
