Art Antwerp
At Art Antwerp 2024, the Maurice Verbaet Gallery presented a curated booth centered on the artistic legacy and ongoing vitality of Antwerp as a cultural hub. Conceived as a dialogue between past and present, the presentation brought together a selection of key post-war artists alongside a contemporary voice, offering a layered perspective on the city’s rich artistic landscape.
The historical section focused on figures who played a significant role in shaping Antwerp’s post-war identity, including artists such as René Guiette, Pol Mara, Paul Van Hoeydonck, Vic Gentils, Guy Vandenbranden, Wout Vercammen, and Marc Verstockt. Their works highlighted a broad spectrum of practices—from abstraction and material experimentation to geometric and conceptual approaches—reflecting the diversity and innovation that characterized the period.
In parallel, the inclusion of a contemporary Antwerp-based artist introduced a current perspective, creating a meaningful connection between generations. This juxtaposition underscored the continuity of artistic production in the city and emphasized Antwerp’s enduring relevance as a place of creative exchange.
