Contemporary elements were introduced through the linocuts of Lukasz, creating a dialogue between historical practices and present-day approaches to repetition and graphic language.

At Art Antwerp 2022, we presented a focused selection of works spanning the 20th century, with particular emphasis on works on paper and the relationship between drawing, painting and printmaking.

The presentation brought together a substantial group of works by Hugo Claus, whose drawings and mixed media works on paper revealed a highly personal and experimental approach to image-making, oscillating between figuration and abstraction. These were shown alongside works by artists such as René Guiette, Vic Gentils and Paul Van Hoeydonck, highlighting different trajectories within Belgian modern and postwar art.

A strong presence of works on paper—ranging from intimate sketches to more elaborate compositions—underscored the importance of drawing as both an autonomous medium and a space for experimentation. In parallel, paintings by artists including Renée Demeester, Pol Mara and Gilbert Swimberghe explored color, gesture and structure in a more expansive format.
