 Starting September 24, RSF A Moveable Gallery (Paris-France) presents an exceptional collection of photographic works by Marcel Mariën, most of which have never previously been exhibited in France, from the private collection of Maurice Verbaet (in Antwerpen). A key figure of Belgian Surrealism, Mariën never stopped pushing the boundaries of creation. A photographer, collage artist, writer, and editor of the journal and publishing house Les Lèvres nues, he was a provocateur of ideas whose body of work is marked by a rare freedom and ingenuity, unconstrained by convention. Close associate of René Magritte, whom he met at the age of 17, he became the youngest member of the Belgian Surrealist group. This exhibition constitutes a landmark presentation, marking the artist’s first showing in Paris and in France. His most consistent trait was a refusal of easy fame and institutional compromise. He built a voice entirely his own, independent and radical. His inventiveness derived from a rare ability to move fluidly across disciplines: image, text, object, publishing, all in service of a thinking that was wholly free, ironic, and resolutely unconventional. Note: L'Introuvable (1937) stands as Marcel Mariën's most celebrated Surrealist object. Conceived following the accidental breaking of his glasses, it takes the form of a singular eyewear frame fitted with two temples but only one central lens, conceived, with characteristic irony, for a "cyclops," as the artist himself remarked.
